Stability

          Boric acid is stable at ordinary temperatures. It is volatile in steam without decomposition.

Dehydration Characteristics

          When heated above 100oC in the open, it gradually loses water, first changing to Metaboric Acid, HBO2 of which three modification exist. These have melting points respectively of 176oC, 210oC and 236oC. Dehydration stops at the composition HBO2 unless the time of heating is extended or the temperature raised above 150oC. On continued heating at higher temperature all the water removed leaving the anhydrous oxide, B2O3 the crystalline form of which melt at 450oC. The amorphous form, which is produced by normal dehydration and which is the commercially available type, has no define melting point. It start to soften at about 325oC becoming fully fluid at about 500oC

Note: The solubility of boric acid in water is influenced by the presence of certain other substances. Sodium Chloride, Lithium Chloride and mineral acids decrease the solubility. Potassium Nitrate, Sulphate and Chloride, and Sodium Nitrate and Sulphate increase the solubility. Borax raises the solubility of Boric Acid due to forrnation of Sodium Polyborates
